He landed, travelled halfway to the venue, turned around, and left. This about sums up the trip of BJP MP Varun Gandhi to Bikaner on Sunday to attend a seminar on Nationalism. Varun was apparently upset when he came to know that there was a very small audience, however, organisers said he left as he was unwell.

He also did not want his first political outing in Rajasthan to be mired in controversy as some of the invitees were from Congress, while others from BJP share less than cordial relations with Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje. The organisers had promised Varun a huge gathering of brahmins, who make up a sizeable vote bank in Western Rajasthan.

The BJP MP from Sultanpur had come to Bikaner on the invitation of a brahmin organisation, Saraswat Community Foundation League, headed by a Gujarat-based businessman. He was to address a seminar on Nationalism as part of Rashtreey Gaurav Diwas programmes at Lunkaransar.

Varun landed at Naal airport in Bikaner at 11am and even started his journey to Lunkaransar, around 70 km from Bikaner, but turned around about halfway, and returned to Delhi by 1 pm.

Varun showed apparent signs of displeasure even as he was being received at the airport. As per sources, he was unhappy when told that the event would have BJP MLA Ghanshyam Tiwari and Congress leader and former home minister of Rajasthan Virendra Beniwal sharing the stage with him.

As per sources who do not wish to be named, Varun had been assured that the event would have an audience of thousands, but on the way he discovered that there were but a few hundred.

Sources added that some local BJP leaders were upset at Varun was sharing the stage with Congressman Beniwal and had planned to oppose it when he came.

The organiser Sampat Saraswat, a Surat-based businessman, said "Varun Gandhi was unwell and so he left without attending the programme."

WHY HE LEFT

  • Organiser Sampat Saraswat, a Surat-based businessman said Varun left as he was unwell

  • Sources say he left as he heard turnout was low, and local BJP leaders said they would protest as he was sharing the stage with Congressman Beniwal
