In the run-up to the 2019 elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged off world's first diesel to electric converted locomotives in his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi after its mandatory trials and unveiled a series of development projects to the tune of Rs 3350 crore.

A complete 'Make in India' initiative, the project is a step towards saving traction energy cost and cutting down on carbon emissions. According to sources, the diesel locomotive works took only 69 days to convert two WDG (Wide diesel goods) 3A locos into a twin electric WAGC3 locomotive of 10,000 horsepower (HP).

The Prime Minister also unveiled a series of development projects pertaining to various sectors like health, sanitation, smart city, connectivity, power, housing to the tune of Rs 3350 crore.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the newly constructed Madan Mohan Malviya Cancer Centre of Banaras Hindu University. The 350-bed hospital has been built at a cost of Rs 500 crore. The PM also inaugurated Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital Lehartara, another big cancer treatment facility. This was the Prime Minister's second visit to his constituency within a month.

Addressing a massive public gathering at Aaure, on the outskirts of Varanasi, the Prime Minister said his government is working on two fronts to give a boost to the development. "The first one relates to building infrastructure like highways, railways etc, while the second one is to ensure that the benefits of development reach out to the people," the Prime Minister said.

Speaking on the Locomotive Train flagged off at Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi, the Prime Minister said such an initiative, under Make in India, will help in strengthening the capacity and speed of Indian Railways.

Speaking about various development and infrastructural projects in his Lok Sabha constituency, PM Modi said this is an effort towards making Varanasi "an important centre" of "new India." The Prime Minister said these projects will not only ease transportation but also lead to setting up of new enterprises in Varanasi, Purvanchal and nearby areas.

Prime Minister said BHU Cancer Centre and Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Lahartara will provide advanced treatment to patients from Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and other nearby states.

PM Modi said over the last four and half years various steps were taken to "transform" Railways and Vande Bharat Express – India's first semi high-speed train between Delhi and Varanasi flagged off last week – is one such step.

The Prime Minister said around 1 crore 20 lakh families in UP will be benefitted from Ayushman Bharat scheme. He said PM Kisan Samman Nidha Yojana will benefit about 2.25 crore poor farmers in the state.

The Prime Minister distributed certificates to the beneficiaries of various developmental schemes. He also released commemorative postage stamp on completion of 100 Years of IIT, BHU.
