Vadodara, the cultural hub of Gujarat, is now set to be developed as the sports capital of the State. Gujarat Finance Minister Saurabh Patel said the city would soon emerge as the sports capital.

"It's dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to develop Vadodara as the sports capital of Gujarat," he told PTI on the sidelines of a sports event here yesterday.

Patel, who also holds industry, civil aviation, energy and tourism portfolios, was here to present prizes at the end of CBSE Schools National Swimming Championship that concluded at Vadodara Municipal Corporation's indoor stadium.

More than 870 swimmers from across India and also countries like Dubai, Qatar, Oman, UAE, Iran and Kuwait took part in the four-day event, he said.

"This was the first international-level championship held at the swimming pool in the stadium which was constructed during tenure of Modi as Chief Minister," said Patel, who represents Akota constituency here in the Assembly
