The Congress got a serious jolt here on Monday as its leader, Ghanshyam Patel, who was in the running for Congress ticket for the Vadodara seat, joined BJP along with his supporters. A formal announcement to this effect was made by the state BJP president in Ahmedabad.
His exit will be a major loss for the Congress as Patel has good support base in rural areas, like Savli and Waghodia. He was amongst the few strongmen of Congress who managed to get votes from the rural areas of Vadodara.
Talking to DNA, BJP spokesperson Shabdsaran Bhrambhatt said, “The exit of Ghanshyam Patel has generated a shock wave in rural areas. He joined the BJP along with his 1,000 workers, who will help strengthen the BJP support base in rural areas. These workers had lost faith in Congress.”
Patel’s exit from the Congress can be traced to the party giving ticket to Satyajeetsingh Gaekwad for the Vadodara constituency. The former’s supporters said that the Congress leadership had not taken into account the fact that Patels constituted the majority in the constituency. Party leaders such as Dalsukh Prajapati and Ghanshyam Patel had earlier raised their voice against the party decision and threatened to resign from the party.
Talking to DNA, city Congress president Suresh Patel said, “Congress will not be affected with Ghanshyam Patel’s exit from the party.” In Ahmedabad, state BJP chief Purshottam Rupala welcomed Ghanshyam Patel and KC Patel when they reached the state BJP office. The two leaders were accompanied by over 500 workers, including sarpanchs of about 40 villages. Meanwhile, Dinesh Tadvi, president of the Bharatiya Navshakti Party, also joined the BJP. Bharatiya Navshakti Party was formed by Mohan Delkar, MP from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, who joined the Congress recently.
