Violent protests after V Narayanaswamy named Puducherry CM

He was named as the CM after a legislature party meeting earlier on Saturday.

Congress leader V Narayanaswamy was on Saturday named as the Chief Minister of Puducherry after the grand old party held a legislature party meeting earlier on Saturday. 

However as soon as the news of Narayanasamy being named the CM broke, Namassivayam's supporters protested against the decision against it raised slogans against the move, reports The Hindu.

Ten buses were attacked on East Coast Road from Puducherry to Chennai due to which may commuters were left stranded. Police had to lathicharge many proetsters but even a news photographer was injured. 

Namassivayam's supporters said that Narayanaswamy despite claiming he was not aiming to be the CM worked behind the scenes to make sure he was elected unopposed.

The state party leaders had earlier been to Delhi to consult with the party high command on the choice of Chief Minister. Senior Congress leader and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and Party General Secretary Mukul Wasnik attended the meeting as AICC observers. 

The opposition parties earlier alleged that infighting in the Congress Party is delaying the formation of the government in the state. Former chief minister V Vaithialingam denied any rift in the party on the issue of Chief Minister.

He justified the delay, saying that Congress being a national party, has to consult central leadership before reaching at a decision.
