BJP on Tuesday demanded immediate resignation of the Uttarakhand government on moral grounds for the "deteriorating" law and order situation in the state. Referring to the escape of a notorious criminal Amit alias Bhura from police custody, Leader of Opposition Ajay Bhatt in state Assembly said that the government was unable to stop the rising crimes and hence should immediately resign taking moral responsibility.

"When the state police is not been able to keep the arrested accused in its custody, then one can see how secure the common man is," Bhatt questioned.

Yesterday, Amit escaped from the police custody with the help of his aides while being taken to a local court in Bagpat. The miscreants also took away two AK-47 rifles and an SLR of the cops with them.

Amit was allegedly involved in more than 50 cases of murder, loot and dacoity in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. Following the incident, Dehradhun SSP Ajay Singh Rautala, one head constable and four police constables were suspended.
"Amit was taken to court from train where there were no proper security arrangements. He should had been taken amid heavy security," Bhatt said in a statement.

According to him, responsibility must be fixed on the top level for this lapse rather than suspending low rank officials. "There is complete failure of law and order in the state. The government is contemplating to buy bullet-proof car for the CM Harish Rawat, this itself shows that CM also does not find himself safe," Bhatt said.

"If the CM himself does not feel secure, then one can understand the plight of citizens. The state is reeling under control of land-mafia, mining and liquor mafia and it is becoming difficult for people to come out of the houses," the BJP leader said. He also slammed the state government for not forming separate police commission.

"I have written a letter to CM in this regard, but he turned a blind eye to it," he said.
