Union minister for Water Resources Uma Bharti has reportedly said that the Uttarakhand floods was caused due to defecation near the Kedarnath shrine.

A Hindustan Times report said that Bharti had met with Dehradun-based Himalayan Institute of Glaciology and Forest Research Institute experts. She is said to have pointed out that human excretory activity was prohibited at the natural boundary formed by the Mandakini and Saraswati rivers which flowed near the shrine in 1882. “However, as time passed, atheists came here, mainly for business purposes. This resulted in nature’s fury at Kedarnath in 2013", Bharti was quoted as saying.

Though she also mentioned cloudbursts and excessive rains as the primary cause of the floods, the 'underlying reason' was the excretory functions taking place near the shrine, the report said.

Bharti was in Dehradun in order to discuss the reconstruction of the Kedarnath temple.
