The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) has arrested ten members of a gang who were making fake Aadhaar cards for just Rs 40 by hacking an old software of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and through tampered client application.

STF Inspector General (IG) Amitabh Yash said that finger print scanner devices, several laptops, printing machines, mobiles and hundreds of fake Aadhaar cards were recovered from the members of the gang. The UIDAI had lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime police station in Lucknow  few days ago. During investigation of the case, a team of STF located the mastermind of the gang in Kanpur.  Since then a team was keeping track on all his activities. Once it was confirmed, the STF team laid a trap and arrested 10  gang members including its mastermind Saurabh, added STF IG.

Interestingly, mastermind Saurabh and few of his gang members were working in a franchise company of the UIDAI making Aadhaar cards and they knew the inside out of faking Aadhaar cards. The UIDAI had changed to a new software due to security reasons. “The gang hacked the old software and used it for faking Aadhaar cards through tampered client application faking finger prints and IRIS,” claimed the STF IG about the modus operandi of the arrested gang.

According to STF, the gang had faked hundreds of thousands Aadhaar cards in Uttar Pradesh and four other states in the last six months. They were charging only Rs 40 at par with the Government of India charges so that no one raised any suspicion on them.  The STF has shared details of their investigations with the UIDAI and their counterparts in four other states so that the bogus Aadhaar cards are identified and cancelled at once.

So far about 18 lakhs bogus Aadhar cards have been cancelled by UIDAI in Uttar Pradesh and others states.
