Four Sadhvis of famous Sant Kutir ashram in Basti district of Uttar Pradesh have slapped rape and torture charges against four Swamis of the ashram, including Swami Sachchidanand, and their two women accomplices.

After escaping from the ashram, four Sadhvis met the SP of Basti district and lodged an FIR against Swami Sachchidanand, Swami Chetnanand, Swami Viswashanad, and Swami Bairajyanand and  two women workers of Sant Kutir ashram at Sadar Police Station. All the accused are currently absconding.

Famous for his religious discourses, Swami Sachchidanand runs his ashrams in several other states including Delhi, Mumbai, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Basti SP Sankalp Sharma said that a case has been registered against four Swamis and two women workers of the ashram. “Sadhivs bore injury marks on their bodies suggesting physical assault and torture. They have been sent for the medical examination,” said Sharma.

The police have recorded statements of the victims and have formed teams to arrest the four Swamis, who are on the run. The police in states where Swami Sachchidanand operates his ashrams have been alerted. A few ashram inmates have been detained for interrogation to verify statements of Sadhvis.

Narrating their ordeal, Sadhvi Prema (name changed), who belonged to Chhattisgarh, told the police that two of Swami Sachchidanand's lady accomplices used to lure and recruit girls and women from different states in the name of making them devotees.

Once they came to the ashram, they were sexually harassed by the Swamis. “Most of the girls and women in the ashram are subjected to rape and physical abuse and are threatened to keep their mouth shut. A strict vigil is kept and they are not allowed to have any visitors,” alleged Sadvi Prema.

Showing her injury marks, another Sadhvi said that those who resisted physical abuse by Swami Sachchidanand were assaulted and gangraped by other Swamis in the ashram. “We were repeatedly tortured for saying no and later gangraped and not given food for several days,” alleged the victim.

The victims further alleged that Swami Sachchidanand has several cases pending against him in Basti and other districts. He was earlier known as Dayanand but after a case he changed his name to Swami Sachchidanand.

A spokesman of the Sant Kutir ashram Dharam Raj Chaudhary, however, refuted charges of the four Sadhvis. “They were thrown out of the ashram for financial irregularities. There is not an iota of truth in their allegations,” claimed Chaudhary.
