In a bizarre case, a man in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur has received an electricity bill of over Rs 128 crore, and the electricity department, refusing to hear his plea of 'incorrect billing', has snapped the power supply to his home till the exorbitant sum in paid in full.

Shamim, who lives in the Chamri village of Hapur with his wife, said, "I had approached the electricity department to rectify the error. We were told that they won't resume our electricity connection unless we pay it. No one listens to our pleas. How will we submit that amount?"

For a 2-KW connection, the bill sent to Shamim by the electricity department is for Rs 128,45,95,444. He claimed that the electricity department appeared to have handed him the bill for all of Hapur. "I have been running from pillar to post but no one is listening. It seems that the electricity department wants me to pay the bill for the whole of Hapur," he added.

Meanwhile, an electrical engineer with the electricity department said that it must have happened due to some "technical fault" and that it was "no big deal".

Engineer Ram Sharan also assured that the department will rectify the bill once it is sent back to them. "This must be a technical fault. If they provide us with the bill, we will issue them an updated one after rectifying the technical fault in the system. This is no big deal. Technical faults do take place," Sharan said.
