The UP Police on Sunday claimed to have solved the gang rape and murder case which has been making headlines for the past three days due to the brutality with which a young widow was battered to death after being sexually assaulted in a school in Lucknow on Wednesday night. The police also said they had arrested the accused who committed the horrendous crime all by himself.

However, the revelations made by Additional DG Sutapa Sanyal, who was in charge of the case, at a press conference, have thrown up more questions than they answer. The victim's family members have already termed the alleged "solving" of the case a complete farce.

Soon after the press conference was aired live on some regional TV channels, the woman's brother-in-law told reporters that the police had cooked up a story in a hurry just to save face. The family members
have said they do not trust the UP Police, and want the case to be handed over to the CBI.

"The crime was committed by Ram Sewak, a guard in an apartment under construction near the school where the incident took place. He knew the woman (a widow aged around 30 with two children) and had been lusting for her for a long time," Sutapa Sanyal told the media. "He called her from a stolen mobile, impersonated as one Rajiv and took her on his bike around 9 pm to show her a flat which she wanted for rent," she added. "He was wearing a helmet to avoid being identified," she said.

"There was no gang rape as the crime has been committed by one person. The forensic report states that no seminal fluid has been found on her body which means that she was not raped. There was no sexual
intercourse per se," she asserted. She said the woman recognized the guard once he took off the helmet and a violent struggle followed in which the guard battered her to death.

However, after reading out a written report, the lady ADG was at a loss for words when reporters lobbed a slew of questions at her. "She clearly read out from a script written by someone else," a
retired DGP reacted on condition of anonymity. "This is very dramatic. Nothing but a cover-up," he said.

Questions clouding the UP Police story:

Why and how did an unarmed man batter an able bodied young woman so badly, especially when there was no particular reason for hatred or frenzied anger?

Why did the woman leave the house with 'Rajiv' at night leaving her daughter (13) and son (6) alone at home?

If she knew this Rajiv, as the police claim, why didn't she recognize him even if he wore a helmet.

Why didn't this person whose mobile the guard allegedly stole report the loss to the police or get his SIM card blocked?

Why doesn't the police know anything about who this 'Rajiv' is, even whether he exists or not? Is he a fake character designed to fit the police script?

The woman lived in the area and knew it well. Why didn't she object when the guard took her to a deserted area instead of an apartment block to show her the flat for rent?
