Assessing terror threats during 49-day Kumbh Mela to be held in Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad, the state government has approached Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to carry out a comprehensive security and anti-fire audits. The force has also been asked to carry out security of Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Bhawan, secretariat and the chief minister's residence in Lucknow.
The state government has roped in the force to ensure that no untoward incidents take place. Interestingly, the CISF has reportedly been asked for help after state Director General of Police Om Prakash Singh stressed upon the need to do so as he had headed the paramilitary force before being assigned to lead Uttar Pradesh police.
The Mela will begin in Allahabad on January 15 next year. The main area of Kumbh Mela will be doubled from the earlier 5,000 acres to 10,000 acres this time and 15 crore people are expected to attend it, according to estimates announced by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The CSIF will now send a special team of experts from the central paramilitary force to carry out reconnaissance and survey of the Mela area at the banks which is the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers. Once done, the force will submit its detailed report to the Uttar Pradesh Police and administration.
The CSIF has one-of-its kind security consultancy unit within the force and it advises organisations and large undertakings to prepare against potential security, fire and disaster threats.
As there is going to be a congregation of crores of people and devotees at the Kumbh Mela along with persistent terror threats, Singh sought the services of CISF to ensure the event is conducted smoothly and safely.
Previously, on February 10, 2013, a stampede at a railway station in Allahabad killed at least 42 pilgrims and injured more than 50 people during the Kumbh Mela. So erring on the side of caution,
Singh has asked the CISF to advise and guide the local police force on how to deploy smart gadgets and security manpower to keep the activity area of the mela and its vicinity safe round-the-clock.
Additionally, the paramilitary force will suggest to the local police where to install CCTV cameras, where to deploy security staff, how to have access control and where to install emergency response gadgets.
