An Uttar Pradesh-run medical college on Wednesday has banned medical students from wearing jeans and t-shirts to college. In addition, students from the state-run Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) in Kanpur have now been banned from growing their hair or growing stylish beards.

However, Sikh and Muslim students can grow beards and their hair on religious grounds.

Medical College authorities claimed that indiscipline was growing in the college campus due to wearing of informal dresses and keeping stylish beards.

“We have students coming from abroad for medical studies. It was found that indiscipline was growing the college campus for the past few years due to informal dressing. After discussion, the management has decided to enforce the new dress code,” said a senior faculty member.

Under the new rules, only formals are allowed and keeping any style of beard is banned. Men are supposed to shave every day and keep their hair well-groomed. People who are dressed casually or coming to college in an unkempt way will be barred from entering the college premises.

“We have, however, relaxed the rule for those medical students who keep beard and long hairs on religious grounds,” said the college management.

“The new dress code is as per the guidelines issued by the Medical Council of India (MCI). We are only enforcing it and there is nothing controversial about it,” said Dr Ajay Sharma, Media in-charge of the college.

It will be mandatory for first year students to wear long lab coats with badges of their names. Similarly, the second, third, fourth and final year MBBS students will have separate lab coats.  This will help faculty staff to distinguish their batches.

Though students at the GVSM Medical College have no choice but to follow the dress code diktat of the college management, a few students are opposed to it citing practical reasons. “We spent the whole day in the college and night in library for studies. It is not practically possible for us to shave daily and wear formals amid such hectic study schedule,” rued one of them.

Earlier, the Yogi government had banned jeans and t-shirts and other informal dresses for the government employees and teachers in schools and colleges after banning cigarette and gutkha in offices.
