A man was brutally thrashed with sticks by a group of people in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar for 'disrespecting' God. He is currently in hospital and police are looking to arrest the culprits who beat him up.

A video that went viral shows Vipin Kumar being brutally beaten and forced to chant the name of Hindu gods, according to a NDTV report.

The four men continued beating him and abused and forced him to chant the name of Hindu gods and goddesses in Kelanpur village.Vipin Kumar was a part of the dalit group that actively protested for atrocities against the community and to end discrimination against them.

The police suspect Vipin was targetted as an act of revenge by the group of people for allegedly being involved in an incident where a group of Dalits went on a spree to throw out idols and pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses from homes of the people.  Vipin Kumar and others were then arrested after some right-wing local groups registered a complaint against the incident. However, he was later released on bail.

This incident comes at a time after Dalits were thrashed in Bhima-Koregaon on the 200th anniversary of the battle between the Mahars and Peshwa army. It was on January 1 when thousands of Dalits gathered at Bhima Koregaon, a village near Pune to commemorate the bicentenary of a battle in which they had sided with British forces against the Peshwas. Local villagers, allegedly instigated by some right-wing groups, asserted that the pilgrimage-like event glorified the British and was anti-national. The clashes sparked large-scale protests by Dalit groups and parties across Maharashtra, paralysing towns and cities, including Mumbai, for the next two days.
