In a grim reminder of the horrific 2016 Bulandshahr highway gangrape incident, a Muslim family was attacked by a group of at least five criminals on Jewar-Bulandshahr highway on the intervening night of May 24 and May 25.

The attackers shot dead a man when he objected to criminals assaulting the women of the family. The family was robbed and four women were raped by six criminals. The women have been rushed to the Noida district hospital for medical examination.

The fresh incident has put the spotlight on the much maligned law and order in the state. The police are accused of reacting hours late after the incident.

DNA has a copy of the complaint which reads that around 12 am, eight members of a family, including four women, were travelling from Jewar in Greater Noida to Bulandshahr to meet an ailing relative. The criminals 200 metres away from Sabota village in Jewar area, punctured the Maruti Eeco car in which the family was travelling. The car was intercepted at about 1.30 am by criminals who had an iron rod, knife and a country-made pistol. They opened fire in the area to trigger panic.

The criminals raped four women, including a 50-year-old woman. When one of family members protested, he was shot. The family was then looted of cash and valuables at gun point. The criminals also thrashed the family members, including females, and threatened them of dire consequences.

After a while, on seeing a police van, the criminals opened fire in the area and fled.

The police have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits. The SSP along with other police officials have reached the spot and have assured strict action.

SSP Luv Kumar said that as the car tyre was punctured, the criminals overpowered the family. “We are lodging an FIR and a manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits. The women have been sent for medical examination and the body of the person who died in the incident has been sent for post mortem examination,” he said.

Meanwhile, the family has claimed that the police reacted late and the criminals went on a rampage for hours. The criminals robbed Rs 44,000 and jewellery from the family.

Following the incident, senior police and administration officials reached the scene. Local MLA from Jewar, Dhirender Singh also visited the hospital to meet the family.

Following the visit, MLA Dhirender Singh told DNA that the family had left Jewar for Bulandshahr on Wednesday night around 12.30 am.
