A 45-yer-old Dalit woman was stripped, thrashed and her private parts were burnt with a hot iron rod after she was accused of stealing gold ornaments during a relative’s wedding in Tahipur Baki village in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

The woman has been admitted in Jaunpur district hospital where her condition was stated to be critical. Her husband has lodged a complaint against her relatives with the police.

A resident of Kandrapur village under Saraikhwaja Police station, the woman had come to Tahirpur Baki village to attend wedding of her maternal uncle’s daughter. After the wedding on May 30, her relatives accused her of stealing gold ornaments the next day.

On suspicion they searched her luggage and stripped her naked. When she denied having stolen missing jewellery, they brutally thrashed her with sticks.  Later, they tortured by burning her private parts with hot iron rod for she admitting the theft and recovery of the stolen jewellery.

The torture continued till the woman fell unconscious. Fearing that the woman might die, they called her husband and son who rushed her to the district hospital. The husband also tried to lodge an FIR at Sikrara Police Station, but was allegedly shown the doors.

Doctors attending her said that her private parts were brutally burnt and the woman bore serious external injury marks all over body. “She was tortured severely. Her condition is critical. We have informed the police,” said a senior doctor of the hospital.

After the intimation from the hospital, the police swung into action and registered a case against her relatives on the basis of her medical report. A case has been registered and the police have detained two relatives, involved in the torture, and brought them in for questioning.
