A police officer and a criminal carrying a reward on his head were injured during a late night encounter near a village here, officials said on Tuesday.

The clash between the police and the criminals took place on Monday night near Nagla Ramtal village, falling under the jurisdiction of Vrindaban police station, they added.

"Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and the Manoj, alias Anil, a resident of Jait, carrying a reward of Rs 20,000 on his head have been hospitalised," Senior Superintendent of Police Swapnil Mamgai said.

Acting on a tip-off, Singh reached the forest area of Nagla Ramtal village last night with a police team and faced indiscriminate firing by Manoj and his associates, Mamgai said.

Manoj sustained a bullet injury in his foot, while Singh injured his hand in the cross-firing that ensued, he said, adding that Manoj's associates managed to flee using the cover of darkness.
