A seven-year-old boy was mauled by a leopard at Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday. This was the second incident of a leopard killing minors in the last three days at the wildlife sanctuary.

The victim Robin (7) of Amba Vishunapur village under the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary range had gone inside the sanctuary to play with his friends when the leopard attacked him. His friends raised an alarm but before the villagers could come to his rescue, the leopard dragged him inside the deep forest. His remnants were later found in the jungle.

On Thursday, an eight-year-old girl was attacked and killed by a leopard. Villagers claimed that they had complained to the forest department several days ago that they have spotted a leopard in the village but despite that, they did not take any action to lay a trap for catching the man-eater who has attacked many villagers in the past and killed over half a dozen animals.

The District Forest Officer (DFO) Katarniaghat GP Singh said that they had laid traps at several places but could not catch the leopard. He said that the department has already sounded a warning to people in villages falling under the wildlife sanctuary range not to allow children go inside the forest for goat and another animal grazing till the leopard is caught.

“It seems that the leopard is injured and has entered into human habitat for food targeting small children and animals,” pointed the DFO.
