Strongly condemning the attack on Istanbul airport, American Ambassador Richard Verma on Wednesday said the US would continue to work with partners, including India, to defeat terrorism.

"Let me take a moment to discus the horrendous event that took place in Istanbul last night. The United States condemns in the strongest terms the attack on the Ataturk International Airport," Verma said.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victims and their loved ones and we wish a swift recovery to those injured," he added.

"The global bonds between our citizens are more powerful than the gun or bomb of any terrorist and we will continue to work with our partners, including India, to confront and defeat this challenge," Verma said.

His remarks came while delivering the key note address at a conference organised by Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) on the theme of "Travel and Tourism as a means to achieve USD 500 billion trade between India and USA".

He added: "As the White House stated, airports are a symbol of the international connections and ties that bind us together. I think that's exactly right."

At least 36 people have been killed and nearly 150 wounded at the international terminal of Istanbul's Ataturk airport in a terrorist strike last night.
