The Gujarat Assembly was adjourned briefly toady following heated exchanges between the ruling BJP and opposition Congress MLAs over the issue of gas production in the KG Basin block.

Speaker Ramanlal Vora adjourned the proceedings for five minutes at the fag end of the question hour, when Congress MLA Tejashreeben Patel sought a reply from the government about the production in the KG Basin block.

Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation has invested in the block.

In a written reply, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said as of December 2016, state government had spent Rs 14,738 crore on the KG Basin block, while commercial production of the gas had not yet started.

Tejashreeben blamed the government for not being able to achieve the target despite a huge spend. KG Basin was all about "Corruption Generation", she said, alleging a scam.

It drew a sharp reaction from the treasury benches as well as the Speaker who asked the Leader of Opposition Shankersinh Vaghela to ask her to refrain from making such allegations.

However, Vaghela said Tejashreeben had raised an important issue, and the government must give a reply when corruption had taken place on such a scale.

Nitin Patel shot back saying that Tejashreeben belonged to a party which did nothing but scams. "This party (Congress) did all kind of corruption, be it in the air, land or beneath the land," said Patel, leading to an uproar.

The Speaker then adjourned the proceedings till the end of question hour.
