Not even Union minister of state for Human Resource Development and RLSP chief Upendra Kushwaha was spared during the arson that took place in Bihar as part of the day-long Bharat Bandh called by various groups of forward castes on Tuesday that crippled services in some states. Several people, including cops, were injured in the violence.

In Bihar's Hajipur, the junior Union Minister was manhandled by bandh supporters while on his way to Motihari to attend PM Narendra Modi's "Satyagrah se Swachhagrah" event.

When Kushwaha, who hails from the OBC community, asked why his motorcade had been interrupted and what he could do for them, the agitators asked him to step out and raised slogans against reservation. It was then that some of the bandh supporters and locals misbehaved and manhandled the minister, who was promptly rescued by his security guards.

As PM Narendra Modi was slated to visit Bihar on Tuesday, strict security measures had been put in place and additional forces had been deployed by Bihar Police to avoid any untoward incidents.

The bandh witnessed sporadic violence with Bhojpur, Muzaffarpur, Begusarai, Lakhisarai and Gaya among the worst-hit districts. Trains were stopped at some places, including Nalanda and Ara, while several national and state highways were also blocked by the protestors.

In Muzaffarpur, a petrol pump was ransacked and roads were blocked by the protestors and cops were chased away by the miscreants. Bhojpur saw violence and firing as anti and pro-quota groups clashed and prohibitory orders were put in place here, while in Begusarai, an SHO was injured in the clash. At least a dozen people sustained serious injuries in the bandh across the state.

At several places, they forced closure of shops and shopping complexes. As a precautionary measure, some schools in Patna and districts like West Champaran had suspended their classes while varsities such as Magadh University had postponed their annual exams.
