BJP president Amit Shah today expressed grief over the loss of lives in a train accident in Muzaffarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh, and said he had asked the local party unit to join the rescue efforts.

"Deeply pained by the tragic rail accident in Muzaffarnagar (U.P). My deepest condolences to the bereaved families, may injured recover soon.

"I have asked the BJP Muzaffarnagar unit to join the rescue operation and help the people in need," Shah tweeted.

In a major train accident, at least 23 passengers were killed and many others injured when 14 coaches of the Puri- Haridwar Utkal Express jumped the rails in Khatauli near Muzaffarnagar this evening, officials said.
