The emergency helpline number 112 which the Centre plans to extend to launch nationwide has neem adopted in Uttar Pradesh, replacing the earlier emergency number of 100.

Dial 100 was launched by Akhilesh Yadav government in 2016 as the emergency police helpline number. However, the 'Dial 100' will be replaced by 112 emergency service which would be the unique number for all emergency services including police, fire, ambulance and State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF).

The Dial 100 was launched as an ambitious high-tech project by the Samajwadi Party government in 2016. The call received on its control room is immediately transferred concerned police station and other officers for action. This system also monitors the police action until the problem is solved. Hundreds of response vehicle - both two-wheelers and four-wheelers - are deployed to attend to the problems and take action.

This facility will be launched by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on October 26. In UP, there are currently different emergency numbers for different services. For example, there are two emergency numbers - 102 and 108 - for ambulance services in the state.

Post-October 26, all emergency numbers - 100 for police, 101 for fire and 1090 women helpline - will be integrated into a single Emergency Response Support System (ERSS).

Earlier in September, the 112 service was launched in Delhi. Minister of State (MoS) for Home G Kishan Reddy had then said that the emergency number would be extended to other parts of the country over a period of time.

"We have coincided all emergency and helpline numbers of Delhi and have introduced one single helpline number - 112. It will be operational across the nation very soon," said Reddy.

22 states and union territories have so far joined the '112' network. After adoption by all states, the 112 ERSS will be a single pan-India emergency service for emergencies, just like the 911 emergency service in the United States.
