UP to get more than 70K affordable houses for urban poor

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) has approved construction of 70,784 affordable houses in Uttar Pradesh under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).

The affordable houses, meant for the urban poor of the state, will need an investment of Rs 3,528 crore, of which central assistance of Rs 1,062 crore has been approved.

According to a statement from the ministry, the decision follows a meeting between Union Housing Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and UP CM Yogi Adityanath.

"The state government sent affordable housing proposals for 145 cities and the same have been approved," it stated, adding that the total number of houses sanctioned for UP has increased to 112,738.

According to sources, this is the first time that the state has witnessed such a huge submission of proposals as the former state government had sent proposals for construction of 13,000 houses under the scheme.

Of the 70,784 houses approved, 56,839 will be constructed under the 'Affordable Housing in Partnership' component and 13,945 houses under 'Beneficiary-led Construction' component of PMAY (Urban). Under these two components, central assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh is given to each beneficiary, the statement mentioned.

Under the latest approvals, Lucknow has got 1,525 houses, Gorakhpur 501, Ayodhya 500, Iltifatganj 903, Faizabad 769, Dudhi 765, Rudauli 713, Singahi Bhiraura 821, Chatra 783, Purdhinagar 674, Kanpur Dehat 442, Daurala 505, Sikandra 447, Akbarpur 449, Aliganj 511, Bareily 139 and Azamgarh 119, the statement said.
