Eleven candidates of The Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) and its coalition partners, filed nomination papers for the UP Legislative Council on Monday. Elections are scheduled to be held on April 26 for 13 Upper House seats falling vacant on May 5.

The BJP has given tickets to 10 candidates while it had left one seat for the Apna Dal (S). Those who filed nominations included Dr Mahendra Singh, Mohsin Raza, both ministers, Dr Sarojani Agarwal, Yashwant Singh, Thakur Jaiveer Singh, Bukkal Nawab (all Samajwadi Party rebel MLCs who had joined the BJP) and Ashok Kataria, Ashok Dhawan, Vijay Bahadur Pathak and Vidhya Sagar Sonkar.

The Apna Dal (S) candidate Ashish Patel also filed his nominations. Patel is the husband of the Apna Dal (S) President and Union minister of state for health and family welfare Anupriya Patel.

Since SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav has already announced to contest Lok Sabha polls from Kannauj, he allowed party state president Naresh Uttam Patel to file papers for the Upper House berth on his seat. The BSP’s Dr Bhimrao Amedkar, who had lost to the BJP’s ninth candidate during Rajya Sabha polls last month, has already filed nomination after the Samajwadi Party left one seat from its quota for the BSP to compensate Dr Amedkar’s Rajya Sabha defeat.

About 29 votes are required for a candidate to win. As such, BJP is all set to win 11 seats while the Samajwadi Party and BSP candidates will easily sail through with their strength of 47 and 19 in the UP Assembly. The result to all 13 seats are likely to be announced unopposed as neither the BJP nor any other political have so far fielded any extra candidate.
