Describing recovery of over 100 bodies in river Ganga as a "serious" matter, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik has called for a through probe into the incident. "It's probably the first such case..It's a serious matter and the state government should probe it," Governor Naik said on the sidelines of a programme in Lucknow on January 14.

BJP leader and local MP Sakshi Maharaj, who visited the site last night, said it should be probed from where such a large number of bodies came. "It is the responsibility of the state government that it should be probed, but it is ignoring its responsibility. It is unfortunate the Chief Minister has not bothered to come here," Sakshi said.

He questioned that why no representative or minister of the government came to the spot. "Post mortem of all the bodies should be conducted and inquiry be launched by CBI or any other (investigating agency)," he said.

In a curious case, over 100 bodies were fished out from river Ganga in Unnao district, prompting the Centre to rush a team of officials to enquire the reason behind it. "Around 100 bodies have been taken out from the river near Pariyar ghat in Safipur area (of Unnao district)," Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) A Satish Ganesh had told reporters.

With most of the bodies mutilated, DNA sampling was used to identify the bodies. The bodies surfaced after water receded near Pariyar Ghat, he said.
