A police officer from the Uttar Pradesh police, who is investigating a gang-rape case, has been accused of seeking sexual favours from the victim. The allegations further state that the cop shut the case when the woman refused.

Naaj (name changed), a 37-year-old woman from Rampur, was raped by two men on February 21 at gunpoint. She was given a lift by the two men, one of them known to her, when she was returning home after visiting a relative. They dropped her home but on finding no one there, gang-raped her at gunpoint.

The woman went to lodge a police complaint the next day at Rampur Ganj Police Station, but her complaint was not lodged. Later, she approached the local court and on its direction, an FIR was lodged after a week. Two men identified as Sattar Ahmed and Ameer Ahmed were booked under Sections 376 (D), 323, 506 of the IPC on charges of gang-rape, criminal intimidation etc. The victim’s statement was also recorded before a magistrate.

The inquiry of the gang-rape case was handed over to sub-Inspector Jai Prakash Singh. While her tormentors are threatening her to withdraw the case, she was begging the investigating officer to arrest them, but he allegedly asked her for sexual favours.

“I visited investigating officer several times informing him about life threats and requesting to arrest them, but he demanded sexual favours before proceeding into the case,” the victim told ASP, Rampur Sudha Singh.

Later, the victim claimed that the cop had started making calls and sending lewd messages. “He even asked me to visit him alone in his room,” she told. When she turned down the SI’s condition, the jilted police officer filed a closure report.

The victim had recorded all his conversations and saved messages in her mobile. When she failed to get justice, she approached senior police officials with evidence against the investigating officer demanding sexual favours in lieu of arresting her rapists.

“An inquiry has been ordered into her allegations against the sub-Inspector.  The Ganj police station has been asked to submit the report within a week to initiate action if charges are proved,” said Sudha Singh, ASP, Rampur.

The Rampur police said that they are also sending the taped conversations between the SI and the victim for forensic examination to check its authenticity.
