The Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav has blamed its alliance partner Congress for the party's poor performance in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections.

Riding on the Modi wave, the BJP on Saturday trounced rivals SP-Congress and BSP in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, getting over two-thirds majority in the 403-House with 312 seats.

On the other hand, SP won only 47 seats and its ally Congress got 7 seats. BSP won 19 seats .

Speaking to Economic Times, Mulayam said, "Samajwadi Party would have come to power if there was no alliance. No one likes Congress. I have publicly opposed Congress."

Mulayam also said that those saying he had supported the alliance are lying. He also questioned what was the need for alliance, saying, the party came to power in 2012 with full majority.

When asked about the party's drubbing in the election, Mulayam said, "The arrogance of the alliance is responsible for the debacle... I don't know if you saw a thela-wala's byte on TV who said I have always voted for SP but not this time as Netaji has been insulted. The message has gone far and wide. What could I have done?"

Talking about BJP's win, Mulayam says that he had seen the wind coming. "It is a big win - a big day for BJP,“ he said.

However, Mulayam also said the party could overcome the defeat if it introspects, rather than feeling let down.

“It is not just time for change, but a makeover,“ Mulayam said.

Pollsters failed to predict a triple century for the BJP at the hustings in UP even as they did forecast an edge for the saffron party in the politically crucial state.

Most psephologists in these polls had projected 160-210 seats for BJP in the state, which sends 403 lawmakers to the Assembly. But the party, by winning 312 seats, surprised many, including some of the BJP leaders.

After the humiliating defeat in the assembly polls, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav suggested that the BJP had won by "misleading" the voters and sided with BSP chief Mayawati who raised questions over EVMs.

"I think in a democracy you get vote not by 'samjhana' (making people understand) but by 'behkana' (misguiding)," he told a press conference here after the poll results came.
