After the joint press conference and a successful road show, the Samajwadi Party (SP) is jubilant over its alliance with Congress. The move has certainly revived the morale of the party, which, until a week ago, was struggling to save its name and symbol.

The road ahead, though, remains full of challenges after former SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s comment that there was no need for an alliance.

To some extent, the success of this venture depends heavily on how the Muslim voter perceives this alliance. There is a wave of resentment in the community against Akhilesh as many blame him for neglecting his father. Others also blame him for riots in western UP.

“Muslims are not happy with SP, although things would have been different if Mulayam was there,” says Abrar Ahmad, a teacher from Shibli Inter College in Azamgarh. Ahmad says he does not deny the power of youth but the country cannot move forward without the guidance of elders.

Ahmad predicts that out of the nine Assembly seats that SP has in Azamgarh, it will win 2 or 3 this time because of Muslim anger against Akhilesh. Azamgarh, Ballia, Mau, Ghazipur and to some areas in Varanasi in eastern UP are Muslim-dominated.

Interestingly, people in eastern UP also admit that development projects, such as availability of power and roads, have been carried out by the Akhilesh government.

In UP’s 403 Assembly seats, there are more than 130 seats where Muslims can decide the future of the candidate.

“Mulayam is credible and we have faith in him but in Akhilesh’s regime, whole western UP was burnt,” said Irfan Ahmad, the Azamgarh District President of Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh. He clarified further that Akhilesh government blamed the BJP for riots in western UP, but the argument of Muslims is that the community voted for the SP so that it could form a majority government and curb such incidents.

Meanwhile, in Lucknow on Monday, a group of Shia and Sunni clerics also appealed to Muslims to not vote for the alliance,  because SP and Congress have cheated everyone.

“There had been more than 400 riots in four years and people have still not returned to their homes,” said Maulana Kalbe Jawwad. He accused the government of crushing the camps and blamed the government for filing a case against Akhlaq’s family in Dadri. He also blamed the government for preference to Yadavs in jobs.

On the other hand, AIMIM president and Member Parliament, Asauddin Qwaisi has said, “Muslims will give ‘triple talaq’ to SP for making false promises for the uplift of the community.”

What they think

A group of small outfits under the banner of Parivartan Morcha, headed by Rajinder Sachchar has alleged that the SP government despite agreeing to implement the recommendations of Sachchar committee for the overall uplift of Muslims, put the report on the back burner
