The Congress on Monday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his controversial “kabristan aur shamashan” (graveyard and cremation ground) remark. They party’s legal cell is set to file a complaint against the PM with the Election Commission (EC). The secretary of the Legal and Human Rights Department of the Congress, KC Mittal, said the party was preparing a petition against the PM. The party’s chief spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala also expressed regret that while people crave food and jobs for a decent life, the PM is promising cremation grounds and graveyards. “We want a better life, but he talks of death and says he will give insurance after death,” Surjewala said.

Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh tweeted: “God save us from the Prime Minister who has reached from vikas (development) to shamashan.”

At an official AICC press briefing, senior party leader Anand Sharma said: “The Prime Minister, true to his form, is vitiating the atmosphere during the election season, stirring communal tensions and polarising the society. His speech on graveyards and crematoriums shows his mindset.” Sharma said that the Congress would also lodge a complaint with the EC, asking it to take stern action against Modi and his party for accusing the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government of practising communal discrimination by building graveyards but not crematoriums, and ensuring electricity on Ramzan but not on Diwali.

WHAT MODI HAD SAID

Modi had said: “If a village receives funds for a graveyard, it should get the same for crematoriums. If it gets power supply for Ramzan, it should get it for Diwali, too. If it gets electricity for Holi, it should get it for Eid, too.”
