Even though the government has been placing emphasis on its flagship Digital India project and the Prime Minister, chief ministers and cabinet ministers are active on social media, but all officers are yet to adopt this as a mode of communication with the public.

Bureaucrats have begun to use the Whatsapp platform to communicate with their officials and several departments have created Whatsapp groups for inter-departmental communication. However, they are not so active on Twitter and Facebook. Two days ago, a tweet by IG Udaipur in the matter of Zafar Khan in Pratapgarh created a storm in the media. This was the first tweet by the newly-created account.

Collectors of Bikaner, Hanumangarh, Churu and Sri- ganganagar, all districts of Bikaner division are also not very actively present on social media. SP Sriganganagar Harendar Mahawar and SP of Churu Rahuldan Barhat both have twitter accounts but they tweet very rarely.

Churu SP Barhat circulated a WhatsApp number for information collection which he monitors himself and through which he has managed to collect information on crime in his district too. Director of Secondary Education Nathmal Didel is also not active on social media. Mainly the officers of Bikaner Division use WhatsApp while choosing to stay away from platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

Hanumangarh Collector Prakash Rajpurohit admits that social media is an excellent tool for communication. Similarly, Bikaner collector Anil Gupta said that social media is a wonderful platform. However neither of them is effectively using their accounts to disseminate information.

In his address to bureaucrats on Civil Services Day, PM Modi asked bureaucrats to use social media for public welfare not for self praise.

Social media platforms can work as an effective bridge between the public and the administrative machinery. Bikaner SP Sawai Singh Godara admits that positive use of social media platforms can definitely bring good results for the administration.
