In what will come as a blow to Pakistan in its ongoing vitriolic campaign against India, and ahead of the crucial one-on-one meeting between US President Donald Trump and PM Modi on Monday on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, Washington has made it clear that removing the special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir is India's internal decision. Meanwhile, the US has yet again called on Pakistan to rein in its terror groups.

In a backgrounder press briefing ahead of Trump's France visit, a senior administration official said, "India's decision to rescind Article 370 in Kashmir is an internal decision, but certainly with regional implications."

The official added that while "the President is likely to stress the need for dialogue among all sides of the conflict", he has also been "calling on Pakistan to prevent the infiltration of militants across the Line of Control that divides Jammu & Kashmir and to crack down on groups on its territory that have attacked India in the past."

The President is also expected to urge the PM to "uphold respect for human rights in Kashmir."

The one-on-one at the 45th G7 Summit in Biarritz in France comes almost two months after both leaders met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan.

Additionally, clarifying the offer of Trump mediating between India and Pakistan, which he has raised three times publicly, the White House official said that there had been no formal request from India regarding this. He said, "He has indicated that he is ready to assist if both sides are interested, but we note that India has not requested any formal mediation."

Since the meet in Osaka, both leaders have spoken once earlier this week.
