American actor Meghan Markle and UK's Prince Harry used their nuptials to create the perfect diplomatic shorthand, heralding the new role of supplementary royalty.

Queen Elizabeth II made Harry the Duke of Sussex in the morning – the last bearer of the title, Prince Augustus Frederick, supported the abolition of the slave trade.

Markle's dress was by Givenchy, designed by the first female artistic director of the French house – Clare Waight Keller. The simple dress (no lace, embroidery nor motif) was also a sign — in a world where headlines announce what a female royal spouse wore, Markle wants to draw attention to what she says and does.

An address was delivered by the American Episcopal Church Bishop, Michael Curry, who quoted the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr and there was a gospel choir in what is arguable the largest congregation of people of colour at a royal British wedding.

For the first time since her divorce, the estranged Duchess of York was invited, showing the role of a modern family, within a new world order. The gilded card was extended to Harry's ex-girlfriends as well, brushing aside old narratives of female insecurity.

And finally, the bride's mother – Doria Ragland – brought a touch of India and singularity to the proceedings. The yoga instructor sat proud and emotional, with a pierced nose – perhaps the first person to do so in the largest, oldest occupied castle in the world.
