Unite to counter Hindutva forces: Kanhaiya Kumar

Kumar, a leader of the CPI's All India Students Federation (AISF), questioned if these differences prevented them from criticising the Sangh Pariwar and asked the Left to unite to take on their common ideological forces as had been done in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Pointing to the short-comings of the Left and secular parties, former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) leader Kanhaiya Kumar stressed on the need for these forces to unite on a broad consensus to counter Hindutva forces.

"They (Hindutva forces) are not strong, but we have failed to recognise our strength," said Kumar, speaking at the inaugural session of 'Mumbai Collective' here on Saturday. He also called the Narendra Modi regime as a "propaganda government" and stressed on the need for Left forces to arrive at a "common conclusion" to save the country, democracy, constitution and its spirit.

"We claim to (have a) scientific (temper). But the reality is we do not have a scientific way of thinking and are unwilling to accept consensus and the lack of consensus," he added, noting how he had been criticised by elements in the Left for mouthing a slogan against late Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

Kumar, a leader of the CPI's All India Students Federation (AISF), questioned if these differences prevented them from criticising the Sangh Pariwar and asked the Left to unite to take on their common ideological forces as had been done in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

"The CPM listens to what the CPI says and the CPI listens to what the CPM says. But the reality is that the people do not listen to these two. I am saying this clearly because of the problem I am facing within the party and organisation. It is becoming difficult to reach a common conclusion…," said Kumar, who defined himself "as left within the Left voice".

"I feel this lack of sahmati (consensus) is the biggest problem. You may be Ambedkarites, Communists, Socialists, progressive or secular. These numbers are huge and much larger than that of the RSS… so all must unite and fight. If these streams unite, it will be revolution as nothing will be left after it as the battle will then be very easy," he noted.

Leading Ambedkarite intellectual Raosaheb Kasbe noted that "unless a revolution takes place in the country, people will not love each other" and added that Marxists had chosen to ignore social movements like those of the Bhakti saints.

Kasbe said India was never one unified political entity which prevented the people from effectively countering foreign invaders. "Our history is that of defeats. We can say we have no history, it is fairy tales and myths," he added, stating that the project to bind India as a nation had been started by Mahatma Gandhi.
