Union Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptullah on Saturday said girls need to be given self defence training.

Addressing a national convention on women and child rights, Heptulla said the Central government under the leadership of Narendra Modi has rightly stressed on development of all in society including women, children, differently abled and weaker sections. Heptullah suggested that efforts should be made to impart safety training to girls.

"Atrocities against women are not acceptable in a civilised society like India. However, this social evil prevails where female literacy is less," she said. Heptulla said equal opportunities to girls be given from early schooling.

On Modi's plank of development for girl child and women, she said, "The NDA government is following the spirit behind 'Sab Ka Sath, Sab Ka Vikas." Girls are the bearer of the next generation, so they must be protected, she said.

Heptulla said there are 45 legislations for the protection of women and girls. She, however, underscored no legal provision could solely cure the malaise. She also expressed concerns on the publicity being given by the media to negative reports.
