After fighting terror, Indian Army has embarked on a new mission to spread awareness against the drug abuse in a bid to counter the Udta Kashmir phenomenon.

Drug abuse has been a matter of great concern in the Kashmir Valley and thousands of youth today are affected by this problem.

To counter this menace, the army organised a seminar on Harmful Effects of Drug on Mental and Physical Health, Society, Symptoms to Identify an Addict and Ways to Overcome at Mind Tree Coaching Centre, Baramulla on Wednesday.

"Counselors covered the harmful and terminal effects of Drug abuse. Finally, how Drug addiction is ruining the youth of our country and leading them into a dark and inimical world was touched upon", said an army spokesman.

Counselors also explained about the role of family and friends in helping the victims in their fight against drug addiction.

Strife-torn Kashmir is emerging as a hub of the contraband drugs with smugglers exploiting the law and order problem to carry out nefarious trade. More than 10,000 drug abusers have been treated in police de-addiction centre alone since 2008.

Police have registered 888 cases of drug smuggling and arrested 1213 persons last year.

Huge quantities of drugs were also recovered in 2017. These include 174 kilograms of Charas, 8259 kilograms of Poppy Straw, 140 kilograms of Heroin/Brown Sugar, 201 kilograms of Ganja, 247341 capsules/tablets, 8149 kilograms of Opium Derivatives, 12913 bottles of Codeine Phosphate and 1285 injections.

"It is extremely important to eradicate this problem from the society and Army will continue to fight against this menace of Drug abuse in the Valley along with the people ", said the army spokesman.
