Senior officials of Union Bank of India's Mumbai branch along with other private individuals were booked by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly violating RBI guidelines and depositing close to Rs 85 crore in old notes post demonetization announcement.

The agency on Tuesday said it had filed an FIR against Ashok Kumar Dhabai, Deputy General Manager (DGM), UBI, Shivshankar Rao, Assistant General Manger (AGM) UBI, and three directors of private firm, as well as a private firm named Pushpak Bullion Pvt Ltd.

Among those private individuals named in the FIR are Rakesh Patel, Mayur Deepak Chavda and Amit Sampat. While Sampat is the director of Mumbai based Pushpak Bullion Pvt Ltd, Patel and Chavda are directors of Pihu Gold and Satnam Jewels, both based in Mumbai too. The case has been registered under IPC sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy, cheating forgery and corruption.

"It was alleged that between November 15, 2016 and December 26, 2016, huge cash amounting to Rs 47.45 crore (approx) and Rs 37.15 crore (approx) were fraudulently shown as deposited in the accounts of two private firms based at Mumbai with Union Bank of India, Zaveri Bazar Branch, Mumbai," CBI spokesperson RK Gaur said. He added searches were conducted at 12 places including residential and office premises of accused persons which led to recovery of incriminating documents.

"The huge cash was deposited in the currency chest of bank in old demonetized currency notes purportedly by representative of the said firms in an alleged conspiracy with DGM and AGM. Thus, the accused persons violated the RBI guidelines issued on November 08, 2016," Gaur added.
