The lawyer for the accused in the recent Uber Cab rape case on Tuesday claimed that a conspiracy was being hatched against his client, but confirmed that the latter has been sent to a three-day police remand.

"My client has been booked under IPC 376, among other sections. I have not received a copy of the FIR as of now. A submission was given in court that he might indulge in evidence-tampering, due to which, he has been sent to a three-day police remand," Alok Dubey, the lawyer for the accused, told ANI. When asked about his client's arrest in 2011 for a similar crime, Dubey denied claims that his client was a serial offender.

"While it is true that he was arrested for rape in 2011, he was later acquitted with a clean character certificate," he said. "This is a conspiracy against my client. The police issued the certificate, and now, they are denying that the officer who signed it was posted at that station," he added.

The Uber cab driver is accused of raping a 27-year-old woman passenger on Friday. The incident resulted in the Delhi government banning Uber from functioning in the national capital even as the company issued a statement assuring its full co-operation to help the victim and her family in their recovery. According to reports, the cab driver was had been convicted for a similar crime in 2011 and had spent over seven months in prison. However, he was later acquitted in that case.
