In a glittering event, held at the historic India Gate, PM Narendra Modi and his ministers came out in full force to present an expansive “report card” of their two years in power. Coming down heavily on the critics of his government, Modi said that several analyses of his government were not in comparison to the previous governments.

“In the last 15 days, government schemes are being analysed, and every scheme is being scrutinised in detail. And today, as I stand here in front of the people of the country, I am satisfied. Because despite the scrutiny we have been put through, we were able to regenerate a new belief and confidence, which has encouraged us to do even better,” said Modi, who was the last one to speak in the event that was showcased on Doordarshan in a six-hour-long event between 5pm and 11pm.

He said that most of his critics have committed the mistake of not writing about the government in comparison with the actions of the older governments. Modi spoke about the coal auctions and said that despite the “transparency” of the auction, there have been protests. “We said that we will use the funds from the auctions for the development of adivasis in those areas, and yet, there has been an uproar,” he said.

He also said that corruption is the vice that can alone take down the country. “It is a termite that will eat the country from within. In gas alone, we found so many fake profiles and fake cylinders, that we retrieved Rs 15,000 crore. We found 1 crore 62 lakh fake ration cards. We recovered Rs 540 crore from fake teachers,” he said, adding that the government has taken given LPG connections to three crore families in one year. “In coming years, we will bring LPG connections to five crore people.”

“If Modi is going stop Rs 36,000 crore from going to people, why won’t they abuse Modi? LED bulbs were Rs 200, now they cost you Rs 60-70. We will take 100% LED connections to 500 cities. That will save us 20,000 megawatts of electricity, translating to Rs 1 lakh crore,” he said.

“There are those who have political compulsions to criticise. That is  understandable. . But two things clear-- There is vikasvaad and virodhvaad... People know which to choose,” he said.

The event, which saw the attendance of most of the NDA union ministers and several Bollywood celebrities, was produced by the NFDC at the behest of the Prasar Bharati. Roshan Abbas’s Encompass Events. Bollywood celebrities Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan spoke about Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Swachch Bharat schemes, respectively. Apart from that Kajol, Raveena Tandon, Manoj Tiwari, Kailash Kher were also present to speak of the government’s achievements. Bachchan had drawn flak when his involvement was announced because of his name having cropped up in the Panama Papers.

Several ministers including Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad, JP Nadda, Smriti Irani, Najma Heptullah, Uma Bharati, Mahesh Sharma presented their achievements.

The event drew severe criticism from the opposition. “There is a drought all over the country.Farmers are committing suicide, but here at India Gate Modiji is celebrating with Bollywood stars,” tweeted Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi moments before Modi took to the stage.
