In a shocking incident of human sacrifice, two brothers in connivance with some women sorcerers (mantriks), killed their mother and another old woman in a village near Ghoti.

Acting on a complaint filed by their sister, Nashik gramin police on Monday (Dec 29) arrested the two brothers and eight others, including six women, for human sacrifice under the anti-superstition and black magic Act 2013.

According to the case filed by Rahibai Pingle, a resident of Take-Harsh, a hamlet in Trimbakeshwar tehsil, her brothers killed their mother and had plans to kill her on the advice of a woman sorcerer.

The incident came to light after a tribal social worker, Bhagwan Madhe, working with Shramjivi Sanghatana, an NGO, informed the police that he suspected some evil practices in the village, said assistant police inspector Suresh Manore of Ghoti. Madhe had also spoken to superintendent of police Sanjay Mohite.

According to Ghoti police, the "two brothers, Kashinath Dore and Govind Dore, residents of Mokhada village in Thane district, told their sister Rahibai Pingle that they were unhappy with their present lives. The sister then suggested that they meet women sorcerers in her village.

The sorcerers, who are related to them, told the two that their (Dore's) mother, sisters including Rahibai Pingle and one of their sister's grandmother-in-law were possessed by evil spirits and that was the reason for their unhappiness.

As a solution, the brothers tortured their mother, Budhabai, for days together and made her confess that she was possessed by unholy spirit. Finally they killed her. They also started troubling Rahibai, who managed to flee from their custody, but fearing death kept quite. However, she spoke up after the police intervened. The Dore brothers confessed to the crime on Tuesday. They had buried the two bodies with the sorcerers' help about 50 feet from their house.

District superintendent of police (rural) Sanjay Mohite, who visited the site of the crime, told dna: "Police took suo moto action on receiving information and are investigating. The case looks complicated as two sorcerers are involved. Those who were killed and the killers are related to them. The sister who escaped too has been threatened. We have recovered the two bodies; one of 65-year-old Budhabai Dore and another of 80-year-old Bugibai Veer. We have arrested 10 people.

It appears the two sorcerers were planning to kill seven women to build a 'muth'. The arrests have prevented further loss of life," Sanjay Mohite said.
