In a freak incident, two 3-year-old toddlers – Nishu and Naksh – were mysteriously found drowned in a washing machine at their residence in the Rohini area on Saturday afternoon.

Senior police officers said that the incident looks accidental but a foul play cannot be ruled out. No FIR or complaint was lodged by the deceased's family members till late Saturday evening.

According to the police, the incident took place around 12.30 pm when the kids were alone at home. Their mother, Rekha, who had gone to buy detergent powder, could not find the twins when she returned.

"After looking around for the kids for about 10-15 minutes, the woman found the washing machine's lid open and rushed there. She saw both the kids inside with their heads downwards. When she pulled them out, both were not responding. She then alerted the neighbours and rushed the kids to the Jaipur Golden hospital, where they were declared brought dead," said a senior police officer.

While the kids' father, Ravinder, an insurance company employee, was at work, their elder son, Aaditya (10), was in school.

The police have started a probe and are also checking CCTV footage in the area to check if anyone entered the house when the woman was away. Primary investigations revealed that the woman realised that the detergent was over after she turned the washing machine on, and rushed to the shop, with the machine still on.

"About 12-15 litres of water were found inside the washing machine. Post-mortem reports are awaited to ascertain the cause of death. What leads to suspicion is that the kids were drowned with their faces down. All angles are being probed," said MN Tiwari, DCP Outer.
