A BJP MLC's two sons have been booked for assaulting and attempting to rape a 24-year-old air-hostess at the legislator's official bungalow in Patna, triggering a political storm in the state.

According to the police, the incident took place on May 16, when accused Sushant and Prashant Ranjan, sons of BJP MLC Awadhesh Narayan Singh, who was also the Council chairman previously, confined the victim in a room at Singh's government bungalow, later thrashing and molesting her.

The victim is an air-hostess with a private carrier and was in Patna to see her mother.

"She was acquainted with one of the sons, at whose request she went to their home for lunch. In her statement, she has said that when she reached there, she was locked in a room and the brothers abused her with the intent of raping her and that they even tried to kill her. She somehow managed to escape the duo," said a Patna Police officer.

An FIR has been lodged in this connection with the women's police station in Patna on Saturday and the police is investigating the matter, following which further action will be taken. "The footage of the CCTV cameras at the MLC's home, the mobile tower locations of the victim and accused, their call and message details etc will be checked to establish the facts," a police source said.

MLC Singh said he was not in Patna on the said date, but has denied his sons' involvement in any such incident.

The incident has triggered a political storm in the state with the Opposition cornering the BJP over the matter. "Is this a new aspect of the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao scheme? If they don't teach their sons how to respect women, what more can we expect from them?" said an RJD leader and added, "The police should ensure justice for the victim by conducting an unbiased investigation."
