Two of Al Qaeda group gunned down after 10 hours of gun battle

A 10-hour-long encounter between the security forces and terrorists ended on Thursday night after the latter recovered bodies of two terrorists of Al Qaeda-linked Zakir Musa-led Ansar Gazwat-ul-Hind from the debris at Balhama in Srinagar outskirts.

The incident occurred when Jammu and Kashmir police repulsed the attack on BJP leader Mohammad Anwar Khan and cornered the terrorists in a residential house after chasing them down at Balhama area of Khunmoh on Thursday afternoon. A personal security officer of the leader and CRPF jawan was injured in the incident.

"Security forces, following leads, cordoned a cluster of houses at Balhama. The hiding terrorists however fired upon the security forces. During the initial firing, a CRPF personnel sustained bullet injuries and was shifted to 92 Base Hospital for treatment. He is stated to be stable," said a police spokesman.

Police said in the incident, two bodies of terrorists have been recovered so far, whose identities are being ascertained. "Incriminating materials including weapon and ammunition have been recovered from the slain," he said.

The slain terrorists were identified as Rasiq Nabi Bhat of Tral and Shabir Dar of Awantipora. Police said as per police records they had joined militancy last year in the month of March and August respectively. The bodies have been handed over to their legal heirs for last rites. Two houses were razed to the ground in the gunfight.

"Police have registered case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been taken up," the spokesman said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Central Kashmir Range, Vidhi Kumar Birdhi said both the terrorists belonged to Zakir Musa led group. "They had joined last year and were part of Zakir Musa led group," he said.

This is the second encounter in which local terrorists linked to global jihadist group were killed in Kashmir in less than a week. Three top terrorists were killed when security forces launched an operation in Hakoora village of South Kashmir's Anantnag district on Sunday night.
