Two minor Dalit girls escaped a rape attempt in Nagla Dhabra village in Karhal police circle in Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Monday.

According to the girls' family members, the incident took place last night when the victims had gone to the house of one Rakesh Yadav from where the accused identified as Dharmendra alias Karu Yadav abducted them and took them in a grove where he tried to rape them, they said.

When the girls offered resistance, they were injured before they could somehow manage to escape, police said, alleging that their efforts to get the FIR registered proved futile.

Meanwhile, a local BJP leader and former MLA Ashok Chauhan along with other leaders took the duo to Superintendent of Police Srikant Singh this morning and threatened to stage a dharna if the FIR was not lodged and the accused arrested. The SP, when contacted, said that the FIR has been lodged and the duo has been sent to the District Hospital for medical examination.
