Gearing up to handle medical emergencies during the forthcoming Kumbh Mela in Nashik, a two-day workshop on public health preparedness response and medical management was inaugurated at the Vasantrao Pawar Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre in Nashik.

The workshop will train 400 officials from administration and department of medicine in handling disasters, if any, during the Kumbh Mela.

The workshop has been organised jointly by the college, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta; All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi; Indo-US Emergency and Trauma Collaborative, National Disaster Management Authority, Indian Medical Association, and Association of Physicians.

The module and training programme is being spearheaded by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS).

Minister of state for water resource and development Vijay Shivtare, who inaugurated the workshop, urged that the Kumbh Mela be conducted in a manner that respects nature. "The biggest challenge could be that of crowd management, as about a crore people are likely to converge in Nashik on a given day," he said.

MUHS vice chancellor Dr Arun Jamkar highlighted the importance of medical management during any disaster and the first response that helps saves many lives. He also informed of the preparedness outlined by the MUHS in the form of emergency hospitals and medical colleges in Nashik en route of the procession of sadhus during shahi snan (holy bath) to function as emergency centres, training modalities for administrative and hospital staff, police personnel and bystanders.
