Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and other top officials summoned before a Parliamentary panel over the issue of safeguarding citizens’ rights on social media platforms have refused to turn up for the meeting.

On February 1, the site’s officials were sent a letter asking them to be present before the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology at 3 pm on February 11.

The committee’s chairman, BJP MP Anurag Thakur, had tweeted the summon on February 5. The panel meet, at first scheduled to be held on February 7, was later postponed to February 11 to give Twitter officials more time to make themselves available.

But Twitter cited “short notice of hearing” as an excuse.

The panel got a letter on February 7 from Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s global lead for legal, policy, trust and safety, stating, “No one who engages publicly for Twitter India makes enforcement decisions with respect to our rules for content or accounts in India.”

BJP has warned Twitter of repercussions. “If Twitter is disrespecting the established institution of Parliament, there will be repercussions,” said BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi.
