Twelve years after acid attack, Sonali Mukherjee ties the knot

The couple got acquainted on Facebook and fell in love.

Acid attack survivor Sonali Mukherjee, whose story was shared on popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), married an engineer from Jamshedpur at a district court in Bokaro, Dhanbad on Thursday. 

Chitranjan Tiwari, Sonali's husband, is an electric engineer working in Bhusan Steel, Odisha and heard about her courageous fight in the media. He later got acquainted with her via Facebook and the two fell in love. But it was Sonali who proposed Chitranjan for marriage. The couple are set to renew their wedding vows with traditional rituals later this month.

On the night of April 22, 2003, 18-year-old Sonali was asleep on the terrace of her house, when some men splashed acid on her, which disfigured her face and even impaired her ability to hear. Since then she has undergone several reconstructive surgeries and fought a painful battle, facing a shortage of funds to fight the court case against the three accused.
