The Tulinj police foiled a major gang war in Nalasopara after they nabbed six youths armed with three sophisticated firearms, six choppers and five high-end cellphones, who were allegedly planning to bump off the assailants of a Nalasopara builder, who was shot four times three days ago.

A team of police officials from the detection branch led by Surendra Shivade were tipped off about the youths, who were heavily armed with five live bullets. The team intercepted them and the youths were overpowered as the search team found weapons. The youths revealed that they were planning to bump off the attackers of Javed Ansari as revenge. The builder survived an attack by three bike-borne persons, who fired four rounds at him on Wednesday. Two gangs were formed and were trying to make their presence felt to gain entry into the world of extortion and killings and were funded by undisclosed highly placed persons.

"We were tipped off that after the group split, the assailants wanted to bump off Javed Ansari and their friends were involved in the shootout. Meanwhile, Ansari's friends planned to kill the assailants as revenge," said a Tulinj police official.

"They equipped themselves with weapons and were waiting for their target when we intercepted them and found weapons on them. We soon overpowered them leading to their arrests," said the official.

"The group was funded by highly placed persons and we are investigating. We averted a major incident," said Shrikrishna Kokate, additional superintendent of Palghar Police.

"We have arrested six persons under section 399 (Making preparation to commit dacoity), 402 (Assembling for purpose to commit dacoity), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from conducting duty) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of Arms Act," said Kokate.

"We would also try to impose MCOCA on the arrested accused," said Kokate.
