During his nine-month tenure as chairman and managing director of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), Tukaram Mundhe always took on workers' unions in the city transport body, as a result of which when he was leaving the PMPML office building for the last time, some workers shouted 'Mundhe Saheb Hay Hay' on Thursday.

In yet another premature transfer of the 2005-batch IAS office, he was transferred from the post of CMD of PMPML to the commissioner of Nashik municipal corporation on Wednesday. Like his earlier appointments, Mundhe's tenure at PMPML also remained controversial where workers unions, some corporators of Pune Municipal Corporation and some officers of the transport body were unhappy with his style of functioning.

When asked about the reasons for the demonstration, Rajendra Kharade, president of the workers union told DNA, "Mundhe's functioning at PMPML was totally autocratic. He never believed in dialogue. We sent nearly hundreds letters to him on various issues but did not get a reply. He was anti worker and therefore, we are happy that he has finally left the organisation."

Right from the day one of his appointment, the conflict between Mundhe and workers was seen when he had suspended some staffers for not reporting to duty on time. Nuruddin Inamdar, general secretary of workers union said, "Mundhe did not show mercy against any worker. He dismissed over 150 workers from service. He did not pay attention to the problems of even handicap workers."

Even the corporators of PMC were left red faced when Mundhe had walked out of the general body meeting where issues regarding PMPML were being discussed. He even got seven threats letters during his stint at PMPML but the officer stated that he was doing his job for public good.

After the transfer, Mundhe said, "During my tenure at PMPML, my focus was to improve service of PMPML for public good. The decisions I took were not aimed at any individual but they were taken keeping passengers in mind. Now in Nashik, I have bigger responsibility and there also, I will be focusing on taking decisions which are of public interest."
