Untouchability and discrimination on the basis of caste are still rampant in India and are hurdles towards the country's development, RSS on Thursday said even as it called for primary education to be imparted in a child's mother tongue.

RSS's Punjab Sah Sanghchalak Jagdish Gagneja, speaking to reporters here, said that it was with a view to combating untouchability and similar social ills that his outfit had adopted the goal of 'one well, one place of worship, one crematorium'.

"In a study last year, we had found that there are many places in the country where segregation is still practised at temples, wells and crematoriums. That is unfortunate," Gagneja said.

He also said in response to another question that such discrimination was more prevalent in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
